Henrietta is known to haunt her former home. The poor young nun, who committed suicide in the castle, is seen wandering the hallways, headless. A mysterious shadow of a man is seen in the chapel, reciting prayers in French, Latin, Spanish and English. He is believed to be the ghost of Father Francolin, who was forced to leave his beloved home under such scandalous circumstances. The haunting image of an elderly woman, with a black veil over her face, appears in mirrors, glass reflections and even in photographs taken inside the castle. This same woman in black is often heard weeping as she glides from room to room. She is sometimes seen in the chapel sitting in the front row of pews. She appears to be reading her Bible and reciting novenas before she fades away. This ghost is believed to be the former castle director, Mother Mary John Baptist Meyers, who was on a mission in New Mexico when she was tragically killed in a train accident near Chama on August 29, 1901.

One of the most haunted areas of the castle is the gift shop on the third floor. In December 2009, Jennifer Bond, her mother and her daughter, Jamie, were visiting the castle to see it decorated in full Victorian holiday splendor. Jennifer said that as soon as she walked into the gift shop, she got the creeps; Jaime and her mother laughingly grabbed her by the hand and started to lead her down the long, narrow hallway to the doll room. Jennifer said that she has never has liked dolls; in fact, her exact words were that she hates them. She said that there is just something sinister-looking about them, like how they stare right through you, without blinking. They were almost to the doll room when something grabbed her from behind and tripped her. She turned to look, and there was a Raggedy Ann doll, lying in the middle of the hallway. Her daughter and mother, knowing her fear of dolls, thought the incident was so hysterically funny that they couldn’t stop laughing. She returned the doll to a shelf and continued to browse the quaint little shop. As she started to walk back down the same hallway, she tripped again in the exact same spot. She turned to look, and the Raggedy Ann doll was lying on the floor beneath her feet, smiling up at her. “It was really scary, because it was the only Raggedy Ann doll in the whole shop. I knew it was impossible that the doll could have followed me back down the hall and tripped me…but that was exactly what happened, and there were witnesses.”

According to museum docent Margaret, the gift shop is thought to be haunted by Jenny Bouton, a seven-year-old girl who died from tuberculosis at the castle when it was used as a sanitarium. She is seen wearing a white dress or nightgown and looks so lifelike that some museum guests have even started to have conversations with the child.
